Helping NZ Go Electric: A Practical Guide to Making the Switch ⚡🚗

Electric vehicles are becoming an increasingly familiar sight on New Zealand roads—but if you're considering making the switch, it's completely understandable to have questions.

How far can I actually drive?

How long will the battery last?

Where will I charge it?

Will an EV really save me money?

And how do I fund and protect one?

These are exactly the kinds of conversations I have with customers.

That's why I created my Helping NZ Go Electric series: not to convince everyone that they need an EV, but to help people better understand their options and make informed decisions based on their own circumstances.

Because the right vehicle isn't necessarily the newest, most expensive or most technologically advanced.

It's the one that works for you.

Choosing the Right EV Starts With Your Life—not the Vehicle

Before looking at models, batteries or finance, I think there is a more important question:

What do you actually need your vehicle to do?

Think about:

🚗 How far do you normally drive each day?

🏠 Can you charge at home?

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 How much passenger and luggage space do you need?

🛥️ Do you need to tow?

🏢 Is the vehicle for personal or business use?

🛣️ How often do you travel longer distances?

💰 What does comfortable vehicle ownership look like within your budget?

For some people, a fully electric vehicle can make perfect sense.

For others, a plug-in hybrid may provide a useful combination of electric everyday driving and petrol capability for longer journeys.

And sometimes a petrol vehicle may still be the better choice.

My role isn't to tell somebody what they should drive. It's to help them understand the different pieces involved so they can make their own informed choice.

Let's Talk About EV Batteries 🔋

Battery safety and battery life are two of the most common concerns I hear.

Modern EV battery technology has developed significantly, and manufacturers continue to invest heavily in battery safety, durability and efficiency.

One technology I've become particularly familiar with through working with BYD vehicles is the BYD Blade Battery.

It's one of the technologies that often generates conversation with customers considering electric vehicles for the first time.

But regardless of which EV you're considering, I encourage people to look beyond the headline specifications.

Consider:

✔ Battery warranty

✔ Battery capacity

✔ Real-world driving range

✔ Charging capability

✔ Manufacturer recommendations for battery care

✔ How the vehicle will actually be used

Driving range can also vary according to factors including road conditions, temperature and driving style, so the advertised figure shouldn't be viewed as a guarantee of exactly how far you'll travel every time.

The good news is that many modern EVs now provide ranges that comfortably accommodate everyday New Zealand driving.

What Is EV Ownership Actually Like?

This is where the conversation gets interesting.

People often start by asking about the technology.

After they've made the switch, they tend to talk about the experience.

Things like:

⚡ Charging at home rather than stopping at a petrol station

🤫 Quiet, smooth driving

💻 The amount of technology included in modern vehicles

💰 Potential reductions in day-to-day energy costs

🚗 Instant electric performance

🌿 Lower tailpipe emissions from fully electric vehicles

For many people, charging at home is one of the biggest lifestyle changes.

Instead of thinking:

"I need to stop and fill the car."

It becomes:

"I'll plug the car in when I get home."

For drivers with suitable off-street parking, that can make EV ownership surprisingly convenient.

What Does It Cost to Charge an EV at Home? 🏡🔌

This is another question I hear regularly.

The answer depends on your vehicle, electricity plan, driving habits and when you charge.

Charging during off-peak periods and having solar can potentially reduce electricity costs further, depending on the electricity plan available to you.

You also don't necessarily need to install a dedicated charger immediately.

However, for people driving regularly, a professionally installed wall charger can provide faster and more convenient home charging.

A smart charger may also allow you to schedule charging for off-peak periods and monitor energy usage.

What about installation?

Every property is different.

The cost can depend on:

• The charger selected • Where the charger is positioned• Distance from the switchboard• Existing electrical capacity • Cabling requirements • Whether electrical upgrades are required

I also work with a local Hawke's Bay electrical company that can help customers who would like information about home charger installation.

Even though I'm based in Hawke's Bay, many aspects of purchasing, funding and arranging a vehicle can be completed remotely, and I regularly help customers throughout New Zealand.

Will an EV Actually Save Me Money?

Potentially—but this is where I think it's important to look at the whole picture.

Don't compare vehicles based only on purchase price.

Consider the total cost of ownership.

That could include:

  • Purchase price

  • Funding costs

  • Electricity or fuel

  • Road User Charges where applicable

  • Servicing and maintenance

  • Insurance

  • Tyres

  • Depreciation

  • Expected ownership period

For example, someone who drives significant kilometres and can regularly charge at home may experience a very different cost equation from somebody who drives occasionally and relies predominantly on public fast charging.

That's why I prefer conversations about individual circumstances rather than blanket statements such as: "EVs are cheaper."

Sometimes they may be.

Sometimes the difference may be smaller than expected.

And sometimes another vehicle type may make more sense.

Funding Your Next Vehicle 🚗💙

One misconception I often hear is:

"I don't think I can afford an electric vehicle."

But there isn't one funding structure that suits everybody.

Depending on individual circumstances and eligibility, vehicle funding may include options such as:

✔ Different loan terms

✔ Deposit options

✔ Balloon payments

✔ Personal lending

✔ Business vehicle funding

✔ Trade-ins

For businesses, there may also be accounting and tax considerations associated with purchasing vehicles and other assets.

These are areas where your accountant or tax adviser can provide advice specific to your business.

My role is to help make the vehicle funding side understandable.

I also don't only help customers purchasing EVs.

I can assist with funding for a wide range of purchases, including:

🚗 New and used vehicles

🤝 Private sales

🏢 Business and fleet vehicles

⚡ EV, hybrid and petrol vehicles

🏍️ Motorcycles

🛥️ Boats

🚐 Motorhomes and caravans

...and other eligible vehicles and assets.

Protecting the Vehicle You've Worked Hard For 🛡️

Finding the vehicle and arranging the funding are only parts of the ownership journey.

Protection matters too.

Depending on the vehicle and your circumstances, there may be different products available, including:

🚗 Motor Vehicle Insurance

🔧 Mechanical Breakdown Cover

💰 GAP Insurance

🛡️ Payment Protection Insurance

✨ Paint, leather and fabric protection

Some of these products will be relevant to certain customers and vehicles and others won't be.

That's why I believe the important thing is understanding what each product does, what it doesn't do, what it costs, and how the different types of protection may work together.

Buying a brand-new vehicle? Look beyond the insurance premium.

One feature I particularly encourage customers purchasing a brand-new vehicle to understand is how their insurer will settle a total-loss claim.

Some new-vehicle insurance policies can provide a new vehicle replacement or Zero Depreciation benefit for up to three years, subject to the policy terms and eligibility criteria.

That can be particularly valuable because a new vehicle will generally depreciate over time. If the vehicle is written off or stolen and not recovered, an eligible Zero Depreciation benefit may help protect the customer from some of that depreciation by providing the settlement specified under the policy rather than simply paying the vehicle's depreciated market value.

It may also influence the amount or type of GAP protection you need.

GAP Insurance and comprehensive motor insurance are different products, and a Zero Depreciation benefit doesn't automatically mean GAP cover isn't required. However, understanding how your motor vehicle policy would respond to a total loss can help you determine whether there is still a financial "gap" that you may want to protect.

It's a good example of why I encourage customers to compare more than just the insurance premium—the policy benefits can be just as important as the price.

For new vehicles, paint, leather and fabric protection can also be something customers choose to help preserve the appearance of their vehicle from the beginning.

Interestingly, protection isn't only about new vehicles.

I chose to have GardX Paint Protection professionally applied to my own 1991 Nissan Figaro because preserving a classic that I genuinely love made sense to me.

The interior will be next, once I've completed some restoration work on the seats.

Sometimes protecting a vehicle isn't simply about its dollar value.

It's about protecting something that matters to you.

EV Ownership Doesn't Stop When You Leave the Dealership

One of the things I want to do differently is help customers beyond the purchase itself.

Buying an EV for the first time can introduce a whole new vocabulary:

  • AC charging.

  • DC charging.

  • Kilowatts.

  • Battery percentages.

  • Charging networks.

  • Apps.

  • Range planning.

It can sound far more complicated than it needs to be.

A few practical things can make ownership easier:

📱 Download charging-network and route-planning apps before your first long journey.

🏡 Explore whether home charging suits your circumstances.

🌙 Investigate off-peak electricity rates available from your electricity provider.

⚡ Plan charging stops before longer trips.

🔋 Follow the manufacturer's battery-care recommendations for your particular vehicle.

🚗 Remember that range can change with temperature, speed, terrain, load and driving style.

And most importantly:

Ask questions.

There are no silly questions when you're learning something new.

EV, PHEV or Petrol—Which Is Right for You?

I don't believe there is one correct answer.

A battery EV may suit you if:

You can charge at home or work, most of your driving falls comfortably within the vehicle's range, and you'd like to reduce your reliance on petrol.

A plug-in hybrid may suit you if:

You can charge regularly but also frequently travel distances where having a petrol engine provides additional flexibility.

A petrol vehicle may still suit you if:

Your driving patterns, location, towing requirements, access to charging, purchase budget or other circumstances make it the most practical option.

Technology should fit around your life.

Your life shouldn't have to fit around the technology.

Helping Customers Across New Zealand

Although I'm proudly based in Hawke's Bay, the customers I help aren't limited by geography.

I've helped people with vehicle purchases throughout New Zealand, and many parts of the process can now be completed remotely.

Whether you're around the corner or elsewhere in the country, I'm happy to have a conversation.

You don't need to be ready to purchase tomorrow.

Sometimes the best place to start is simply understanding what's possible.

This Is Just the Beginning 💙

My Helping NZ Go Electric series started as a way of answering some of the questions I hear about EV ownership.

But ultimately, it became about something bigger.

Helping people feel confident about vehicle ownership.

Sometimes that's understanding EV technology.

Sometimes it's working out charging.

Sometimes it's finding a funding structure that works.

Sometimes it's protecting a vehicle you've worked hard for.

And sometimes it's simply having somebody you can ask:

"Can you explain this to me?"

That's the part of my work I enjoy most.

So whether your next vehicle is electric, hybrid, petrol—or something completely different—I'm always happy to have a real conversation.

No pressure.

No confusing jargon.

Just practical information to help you understand your options.

💙 Real chats. Smart choices. Confident ownership. Peace of mind.

Helping Kiwis fund, protect and personalise what matters most—one conversation at a time.
