I Was Lucky to Learn About Money Early — Not Everyone Gets That Chance

Adrianne with Luna sharing why she is passionate about passing on the financial knowledge she has gained through life, banking, insurance and vehicle finance.

I sometimes forget that not everyone grew up having conversations about money, finance, property and business around the dinner table.

I was lucky.

My stepdad worked in finance and later became the CEO of a roading company. He was the main father figure in my life, and without really realising it at the time, I was learning from him.

I could ask questions.

I could talk about mortgages, borrowing, property, interest and business.

More importantly, I had someone who could explain why one financial decision might be better than another.

That knowledge mattered.

By 40, I owned three houses

I'm proud of that.

But I'm also very aware that I didn't start with the same financial knowledge that everyone else does.

Having someone I trusted who understood finance gave me a head start in understanding how money and borrowing worked.

I still had to work, save, make decisions and take responsibility for those decisions — but I had knowledge to draw on.

Then came around 20 years of my own experience working across banking, insurance and finance.

And over those years, I've realised just how valuable that early education was.

Because I've seen the same thing again and again:

A little bit of knowledge at the right time can completely change someone's financial outcome.

You don't know what nobody has ever taught you

We don't all start from the same place financially.

Some families openly talk about mortgages, interest rates, investing, insurance and business.

Some don't talk about money at all.

And some people don't have anyone around them who understands these things well enough to explain them.

That doesn't make somebody “bad with money”.

Sometimes you simply don't know what you don't know.

That's one of the reasons I've become so passionate about sharing what I've learned.

Financial knowledge shouldn't feel like something you can only access if you happen to have a banker, broker, accountant or finance professional in the family.

Twenty years later, I'm still learning too

My stepdad gave me a fantastic foundation, but my own career has taught me an enormous amount as well.

I've worked across banking, insurance and vehicle finance, and every part of that journey has added another layer.

I've seen what happens when people understand their options.

I've also seen what can happen when they don't.

And sometimes the difference isn't thousands of dollars of income or some complicated financial strategy.

It's one question. “What will this actually cost me?”

Or:

“What happens at the end of the term?”

“Do I actually need this?”

“What am I covered for?”

“Is there another way of structuring this?”

Those can be incredibly valuable questions.

It's why I love helping people

One of my favourite moments at work isn't necessarily when a finance application gets approved.

It's when I'm explaining something and someone suddenly says:

“Ohhh… now I understand.”

I love that.

Because once somebody actually understands their options, they're in a much better position to decide what's right for them.

And that's an important distinction.

I'm not here to tell everyone there is one “right” way to finance a vehicle, structure a balloon payment, choose insurance or manage their money.

There isn't.

Something that works brilliantly for one person could be completely wrong for someone else.

My goal is to help people understand what they're agreeing to and what their options may be.

It's why I created Adrianne Drives Smarter

At first glance, a lot of what I write about is cars.

But Adrianne Drives Smarter isn't really just about cars.

It's about the financial decisions that surround them.

For most households, a vehicle is one of the biggest purchases they'll make outside their home.

Yet it's incredibly easy to spend weeks researching which vehicle to buy and considerably less time understanding the finance, insurance and protection sitting behind that purchase.

That's why I talk about things like vehicle finance, refinancing, balloon payments, insurance, warranties, EV ownership, business finance and total borrowing costs.

Not because I expect everyone to make the same decisions I would.

Because I want people to have the knowledge to make their own decisions confidently.

Passing the knowledge on

Looking back, I realise what a gift it was to have someone I could learn from.

That knowledge helped me put myself in a financial position where I owned three houses by the time I was 40.

Now I've added around two decades of my own experience in banking, insurance and finance to those early lessons.

And sharing some of that knowledge with other people feels like a pretty good way of passing the gift on.

If one article makes somebody ask another question before signing a finance agreement…

If one post helps someone realise that the lowest interest rate doesn't automatically mean the lowest total cost

If one conversation helps somebody understand their insurance properly…

Or if something I share simply gives someone the confidence to ask “Why?” before saying yes…

Then it's worth doing.

Because you shouldn't need to grow up with someone who works in finance to have access to good financial knowledge.

And that's probably the simplest explanation of why I love doing what I do.
