🚗 “I Want to Lease a Car Because I Don't Want a Loan.”

Sometimes the best finance solution starts with asking one simple question: “What are you actually trying to achieve?”

This week, I had an interesting conversation with a customer who came to me wanting to lease a vehicle.

Naturally, my first question was: “What is it about leasing that appeals to you?”

Their answer? “We don't want a loan.”

Fair enough! But that opened the door to a conversation that I think more people should be having when they're looking at their next vehicle.

🤔 Leasing vs financing — what's really the difference?

There's a common misconception that leasing means avoiding financial commitments.

But whether you're leasing a vehicle or financing one, you're generally committing to regular payments over an agreed period.

The big difference is what happens along the way and at the end.

With a typical vehicle lease, you're paying to use the vehicle rather than building ownership. Depending on the agreement, you may have mileage restrictions, conditions around wear and tear, and obligations when the lease ends.

With traditional vehicle finance, you're working towards owning the vehicle outright, subject to the terms of your agreement.

And here's something worth thinking about.

As you pay down your finance, you may start building equity in your vehicle.

That means, if your vehicle is worth more than the amount you still owe, the difference could potentially become a deposit towards your next vehicle.

Of course, equity isn't guaranteed. Vehicle depreciation, your loan balance and any final balloon payment all play a part.

💰 “We really only want to spend $100 a week.”

As we talked further, it became clear that avoiding a loan wasn't actually their biggest priority.

Keeping the weekly payments affordable was.

They had a budget of around $100 per week.

Now, a new vehicle on a lease wasn't going to get us anywhere near that figure with the options we were considering.

So rather than trying to squeeze them into something that didn't meet their needs, we started exploring alternatives.

What about a quality second-hand vehicle?

What about structuring the finance differently?

And what if we considered a balloon payment to help reduce the regular repayments?

đźš™ The result? $114 a week and a hybrid!

We found a very cool second-hand hybrid vehicle and explored a finance structure with a balloon payment.

The estimated repayments came down to $114 per week.

Just $14 above their original target.

And because it was a hybrid, there was also the potential to save money on fuel compared with their previous vehicle, depending on how and where they drive.

But the biggest win wasn't simply getting the weekly payment down.

It was finding an option that better matched what they were actually trying to achieve.

Of course, a balloon payment means there's a larger amount owing at the end of the agreement, so we also discussed how that would need to be managed.

Lower weekly payments are great, but they should never come at the expense of understanding the full financial commitment.

❤️ Why I love these conversations

My job isn't just about arranging vehicle finance.

It's about listening, asking questions and helping people understand the different ways they can fund their next vehicle.

Sometimes a lease really is the right solution.

Sometimes traditional finance makes more sense.

And sometimes a customer comes in asking for one thing, but after talking through their goals, discovers there's another option they hadn't considered.

The best solution isn't necessarily the one you ask for first. It's the one that actually works for you.

So, if you're thinking about your next vehicle, don't be afraid to have the conversation.

Tell me what you're trying to achieve, what you're comfortable paying and what matters most to you.

You might be surprised at the options available.
